Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

The highlight of the day trip  to Abu Dhabi was going to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This impressive mosque can hold up to 40000 worshippers and is one of the worlds largest. The first glimpse of the mosque from the highway is breathtaking as the the roofline has 82 domes.
Inside the main prayer room was overwhelming as this room contains the worlds largest hand-knotted carpet that took 2 years to make in Iran. Also is an impressive chandelier that again is one of the worlds largest measuring 10 metres in diameter and weighing over 12 tonnes. The columns in the mosque are all made of marble and decorated with various precious stones set to form pattens of plants and flowers.
Outside in the courtyard again the marble is inlaid to show flowers and columns are painted at the top in gold leaf to represent palm trees.
We could have easily spent more than the hour we had there and the grand size of the mosque and surrounds cannot be captured in a single photo.
